Reinventing Old Neckties
Reworking Your Wardrobe
One common fashion staple in every well dressed man’s wardrobe is his collection of neckties. So what’s a man to do with his outdated and worn out favorite ties after they've lost that trendy style? Here’s one unexpected answer for those men [or women] who would like an alternative to tossing the old ties, especially if they are irreplaceable keepsakes or were expensive items. Revise and reinvent the old ties into a unique one-of-a-kind vest that can guarantee you a trip down memory lane every time you put it on. There are probably those out there who feel this project is something that they are totally incapable of handling and if that’s the case, you’re probably right. However, just like you’d contact a tailor to alter a suit, there’s always a dressmaker or tailor out there who could handle this project for you. It’s actually a rather simple project, however, some knowledge of garment construction is recommended.
Some Shopping Before You Start
To begin the project you’ll first need to purchase fabric for the back of the vest including the lining and the back vest tie straps [see photo 1]. A buckle fastener could substitute for the straps. The amount of fabric will be determined by the width of the fabric [approximately 1 – 1½ yards] and your size. Calculating the yardage shouldn’t be a major concern since fabric store employees can assist with the details. They can also answer your questions regarding which pattern and notions you should use [A notion is any object used to complete a sewing project]. After you’ve chosen which fabric backing you’ll use [be sure to coordinate it with your collection of ties] stop by the notions section and pickup an appropriate color of thread. One large spool should do, however, again ask for assistance if needed. If you choose a vest with buttons, select some you like along with some sewing machine needles, a seam riper, a tape measure and appropriate weight interfacing. Once all your supplies have been purchase you’ll be ready to have some fun converting the neckties to your brand new vest.
The Fun Begins
Start by carefully opening the ties with a seam riper. There will be some woven lambswool interfacing inside the tie which should be completely removed. Be prepared to steam press the ties flat. Stitch all the tie strips together [see photo 2] with the longest strips in position to extend from the side neck of the pattern to the bottom point of the vest [seams should be no wider than ½ inch].
The amount of ties you collected should be enough to layout the front vest pattern [doubled] after you have sewn all the strips together. Place the front vest pattern on top of the fabric [see photo 3] then pin and cut out. Follow the remaining pattern instructions to the complete your new vest.
